1️⃣ Open File 1

Explanation:

Here, you will be controlling the open file with your rooks and queen as it can allow you to enter the enemy’s territory and will help you to enter the 7th rank.

Example Puzzle:

White to Play

Here, in the above puzzle, White can play Rc2 allowing the rook a good chance to enter the enemy territory via Rc7.

Rc2 gives the open file for white

2️⃣ Practice Puzzles

Instructions:
Try to solve the puzzles without moving the pieces.
Write down your solutions before checking the solution at the bottom

Puzzle Set:

  • Puzzle 1: White to play and fight for the open file

3️⃣ Solutions

1. Cd5 Ed5 Rc1 gets the open C file for white.

2. F5 Ke2 Fe4 De4 Rf2 followed by Rdf8 to gain full control on F file.

3. Rcg8 doubling the rook on G file gives the open file control to black. If black takes the rook on g1 instead, then white will have the open G file control.

4. Qc2 (This gives white full control on C open file). Instead, If white plays Rc2, then black can play Rc8 and fight for the open file.
